Assistant Professor
Coppin State University
Author, Poet, Spoken word Artist, and Professor Kondwani Fidel has used the power of storytelling to confront education reform and civil rights worldwide—captivating audiences at conferences, literary events, and academic institutions. Fidel has lectured and taught classes at the University of East London while touring in the United Kingdom and produced creative and inspiring narratives for brands such as Under Armour, Visit Baltimore, and The Baltimore Orioles.
In 2023, Fidel collaborated with the Baltimore Orioles and Nike to establish the MLB team’s City Connect initiative, through which his words “You Can’t Clip These Wings” centered the marketing campaign and lives on the official team jerseys and commercial merchandise. The success of this initiative landed him on the cover of The Baltimore Sun, where the reporter wrote that “Fidel is rapidly becoming Baltimore’s unofficial poet laureate, following in the iambic footsteps of Edgar Allan Poe in the 19th century and the comic poet Ogden Nash in the mid-20th century.”
He has been featured on The Tamron Hall Show, recognized by Baltimore Magazine as the “Best of Baltimore” for his poetic skills, and called “one of the nation’s smartest young Black voices” by NPR. Fidel is the author of The Antiracist, Hummingbirds in The Trenches, and Raw Wounds.
Having received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Virginia State University and his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore, Fidel is currently an Assistant Professor of English at Coppin State University in his hometown of Baltimore, MD, where he resides.
