The Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) bachelor degree program at the WVU School of Medicine is a distinctive blend of business, science, and information technology. It caters to students who prefer a hands-on learning approach and aspire to make a meaningful impact on patients' well-being without being physically present in a clinical setting
Through the utilization of V-Lab, developed by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), and participation in three mandatory professional practice experiences, students acquire valuable exposure to advanced healthcare applications currently in use. Those students who possess significant work experience and relevant certifications in the field of HIIM may also have the opportunity to develop a professional portfolio as part of their professional practice involvement.
The WVU HIIM program, the first and only one of its kind in West Virginia, offers a unique educational approach through the HyFlex format. This flexibility enables every student to make daily choices regarding their participation in class and associated activities. Each student's experiences are tailored to their preferences and are designed by the students themselves, making them truly individualized.
