Between January and May 2022, HHS reported the number of data breaches impacting healthcare organizations increased by 78% compared to the same period in 2021. Threat actors continue to evolve and adapt their attacks against the healthcare sector. Cyber criminals leveraged Ransomware-as-a-Service to further obscure their identity making identifying the attackers even more difficult. Healthcare also saw an upward trend in attacks use social engineering and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) bypass techniques. In 2022, geopolitical conflicts became increasingly intertwined with the potential to impact everyday life and, as evidenced by the Russia-Ukraine War, businesses operating in conflict areas found their operations and assets impacted as well. As attacks against healthcare firms, supply chains, and operational technology environments show, the attackers are continuing to evolve and refine their tactics.
